I love handmade gifts.
The time and heart put into them just make them so very special.
One day I dream of being able to knit beautiful gifts like her.
But, for now I am happy to complete simple sewing projects like this:
I wanted to make something special for Evan this year.
I always find it SO hard to find projects for boys that are easy and that I think he will like….
So, when I saw this idea on Pinterest I was super excited!
What is it you ask?……Tadaaaaaaaa!
A quilt for his bed made from a bunch of his old t-shirts.
Yay.
I can’t help but smile when I look at it.

Now I must admit… it took a little longer than I expected. Many hours were spent cutting squares. Sewing X’s. Trimming thread. Sewing squares. And finally cutting along all the edges. But I couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out.
I love it.
I really, really do!
It is all wrapped up and ready to go under the tree.
I can’t wait for Christmas morning.
I hope he loves it too!

I'm going to start saving shirts for this quilt. I'm having a hard time finding boy colour fabrics that I like, but I love the shirts I buy him so problem solved.

I save old tshirts too (though I recently lost a few to my closet purge), but you have inspired me to do something with them. I also save all of our old jeans and want to make a patchwork quilt one day with them.
p.s. Why don't we have a knit night in the new year. Say at a cabin in Canmore? About the second week in January? 😉

Just wondered if you made any adjustments to the tutorial. Did you use flannel between your t-shirts and if you cut them a little smaller than your t-shirt squares. I didn't notice them in with your fringe. How long was your fringe…it looks like the perfect length. What a beautiful quilt. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Jan! I followed the tutorial pretty closely. I think my squares were 11" by 11" and then I used quilt batting instead of flannel. I cut the batting to be 9"x9" because I only wanted T-shirt in the fringe 🙂

I absolutely love your t-shirt quilt. What a fantastic idea. When my son was small he had a collection of shirts with funny sayings that he adored. When it came time to pass them along to his younger counsin he was quite sad. They were more than t-shirts, they were an expression of who he was. I wish I'd read about this quilt back then – he'd love it.
